When everyone speaks about making money online in Ethiopia, the first option would be google AdSense. According to google, AdSense has paid nearly 10 billion USD in 2015 for publishers! It is a whooping large amount of money! Though there is no recorded data in our country there are websites who are getting tens of thousands USD per month! So today, I am going to break it apart and discuss it before your eyes.

What is Google AdSense?
Google, US based Tech giant, owns different products and platforms. Among them, there are AdWords and AdSense, where advertisers bid for advertisement and publishers shows advertisement, respectively. Therefore, AdSense means a platform where interested publishers shows advertisements on their websites, videos or apps.
Google AdSense is a program run by Google that allows publishers in the Google Network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video, or interactive media advertisements, that are targeted to site content and audience. These advertisements are administered, sorted, and maintained by Google.
First thing is first. What do I need to start with AdSense?
There are some conditions, you should have to fulfill before you start making money with google AdSense in Ethiopia. These conditions includes:
- Gmail account
- Website
- In addition, Traffic.
The first two conditions are must. You should to have a working Gmail account and a live website. The last one is not compulsory; however, your income mainly depends on how much traffic you have, so it is necessary to have.
Types of AdSense
There are two types of AdSense. Hosted and non-hosted. Hosted AdSense is an AdSense that will be given to publishers who are hosting on google platforms. For example if you are a YouTuber or blogger on blog, then when you apply for AdSense you will be given a hosted AdSense. Whereas if you are a publisher by your own platform (if you own a website hosted by your preferred company) your AdSense will be non-hosted one.

However having a live website might be a challenge especially if you are a beginner. so let me guide you through the basics of creating a website. First, you need a hosting company (where your data stored on cloud). There are many companies in Ethiopia who provides hosting services. You can choose one of them by searching “web hosting company in Ethiopia”. Once you buy your hosting plan then you can install a CMS (content management system like WordPress or joomla) or you can create your own from scratch using PHP. However, I recommend you to use WordPress because it is easy to set up and manage.
After your website became live, you will create your content (it might be blog, forum, news site, video site, directory or something else). Once you have created enough amount of blogs, and drive some traffic to your website, you can apply for google AdSense.
The application process is super easy so we don’t waste our time on it. You can search google AdSense and apply for it following the steps. However most likely, your application might not get approved on the first trial and I will give you some tips.
Try to avoid these mistakes
Unsupported language:- for your surprise Amharic is one of those unsupported language. So do not create any blog or content with your local language unless it is a video.
Valuable inventory:- while choosing your niche, be smart. Try to select a niche that makes your content valuable. If you choose a niche of your interest, you might have a good inventory.
Poor quality website:- if your site’s appearance on mobile devices is poor, then your application might be disapproved.
Contents, which are not supported by google, if your site contain adult content, fake news, hate speech and so on, your application might get disapproval.
