The Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission (ENEC) is a newly established regulatory and development body (established Oct 2025) tasked with implementing Ethiopia’s Peaceful Nuclear Technology Development Program. Led by Commissioner Sandokan Debebe, it aims to develop nuclear power for electricity, health, agriculture, and industrial use, partnering with Russia’s Rosatom to build reactors by the mid-2030s.
Key Aspects of the Commission
- Establishment:Â Approved by the Ethiopian Council of Ministers in October 2025 to manage the, “Peaceful Use of Nuclear Technology”.
- Leadership:Â Sandokan Debebe was appointed as the first Chief Commissioner on October 14, 2025.
- Objective: To diversify energy sources beyond hydropower—which represents ~90% of current supply—and ensure long-term energy security.
- Goal:Â The commission intends to develop two 1,200 MW nuclear power reactors by the early-to-mid 2030s.
