National ID program office is established under prime minister office on September 2021 with the objective of realizing a robust, forward looking and digital ID system for the nation. The Ethiopian ID project has as its vision: “Build a foundational identity platform for Ethiopia, proving that an individual is who he/she claims to be, in a secure, electronic and sustainable way, to support all individual identity use cases for both citizens and legal residents of Ethiopia by 2025.”
The program was led by the Ministry of Peace (MOP), in cooperation with the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MInT) as well as the Prime Minister Office. At this time draft ID law was prepared, technology platform selection was made, a laboratory based as well as a field based soft pilot was launched.
