Partnership Highlights

The Mastercard Foundation and African Leadership University launched their partnership in 2020 with the shared goal of developing and placing two million African youth in dignified and fulfilling jobs by 2030.

Since its inception, the program at ALU has achieved the following:

  • 19 percent are refugees or displaced youth

Isata is dedicated to advancing socio-economic development and government accountability. She has led six community projects in Rwanda through the Rotaract Club of ALU and completed an internship with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development in Sierra Leone.

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Sciences Po 2026

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program strives to provide access to quality and inclusive education to young people from the African continent. By 2030, the Program ambitions to award 100,000 scholarships to young Africans who face significant barriers to access education. This Program is part of an ambitious new strategy (Young Africa Works), the Foundation aims to enable 30 million young Africans to secure dignified and fulfilling employment.

Since 2017, Sciences Po is the only institution from the European Union and the only francophone university outside the African continent to partner with the Mastercard Foundation. Since then, it has been an instrumental member of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, offering a world-class education in the humanities and social sciences that pairs rigorous academic standards with proven expertise in preparing students for the globalised job market.

For its second strategic phase (2024 – 2033), the goal of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Sciences Po is to support 1,450 students and young professionals who demonstrate academic excellence, strong leadership potential and a commitment to achieving change in Africa, but who face significant barriers to access higher education.

The Program’s strategic priorities includes the inclusion of vulnerable groups, in particular: refugees and displaced persons, women (especially those from rural communities) persons with disabilities and persons from isolated regions or those a long way from urban centres.

Training change-makers

The Program shares and promotes the values of inclusion, leadership and access to education championed by the Mastercard Foundation. To do so, it builds on Sciences Po’s historic commitment to excellence, social diversity and equal opportunities.

By opening the doors to top academic programmes and equipping each Scholar with transferable personal skills they can take into the job market, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program aims to train a new generation of change-makers. The Mastercard Foundation works with over 130 forward-looking organizations in Africa, America and Europe to provide greater access to education, training and financial services for economically disadvantaged people to Africa’s youth.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program aims at ensuring that all young people, whatever their background, have the same opportunities to get a quality education and fulfill their potential. African Development Bank – Young Professionals Program (YPP)

The Young Professionals Program (YPP) is a flagship talent acquisition, development and management initiative aimed at building a pipeline of future experts for the Bank. The program targets exceptional, high-potential young professionals who are passionate about Africa’s development and are ready to contribute meaningfully to the Bank’s mission.

Designed as a three-year leadership development opportunity, the YPP offers a unique platform for qualified individuals from AfDB member countries to gain hands-on experience, rotate across different Departments, and prepare for impactful careers in development. It combines rigorous professional development with exposure to the Bank’s strategic operations and policy advisory work.

  • Be a citizen of a member country of the Bank.
  • Be 32 years of age or younger by the date of application.
  • Possess a master’s degree or equivalent in any discipline that is relevant to the business of the Bank, with outstanding academic credentials.
  • Have at least 3 years’ work experience in areas related to the Bank’s high priority areas (Hi-5s).
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience on the African continent and/or in other continent’s developing countries is a necessary requirement.

The Program is a highly competitive Program with a multi-level selection process. Entry into the YPP will be channeled into a single cohort once every 3 years. The recruitment drive will enable the Bank to carry its promotion missions and recruitment process in a cost-efficient manner.

Position Grade: Young Professionals (YPs) are recruited at PL6 grade during the three-year program. Upon successful completion of the program, they are automatically promoted to a PL5 position. Participation in Bank recruitment processes for other positions is not permitted during the program.

Program DurationThree years, culminating in automatic graduation to a regular PL5 position upon successful completion.

Rotation Arrangement: YPs undergo three mandatory rotations across different Complexes within the Bank to ensure broad exposure and skills development.

This development program is structured under the Young Professionals Learning Academy. It is delivered in phases of 12 months each, to deepen knowledge and build technical and leadership skills necessary for future roles. The learning will expose the YP to different functional areas in the Bank where one will have hands-on experience in projects and various work assignments.
