Dorrit Hoffleit, who was a senior research astronomer at Yale University. She worked for more than 50 years in the Department of Astronomy at Yale. Hoffleit also served as director of the Maria Mitchell Observatory on Nantucket Island for more than twenty years, where she ran numerous summer programs for hundreds of students, many of those students went on to successful careers in the field of astronomy.
Dr. E. Dorrit Hoffleit was the author of the Bright Star Catalogue besides being the co-author of The General Catalogue of Trigonometric Stellar Parallaxes. The American Astronomical Society awarded her with the George Van Biesbroeck Prize for a lifetime of service to astronomy.
Dorrit Hoffleit lived for one hundred years and through her summer programs and teaching inspired a lifelong interest in Astronomy in thousands of youngsters – both men and women.
