About the Scholarship
This scholarship is open to applicants from African Development Bank member countries with relevant professional experience and a history of supporting their countries’ development efforts who are applying to a graduate degree program in energy development and related disciplines.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group’s mission is to help reduce poverty, improve living conditions for Africans and mobilize resources for the continent’s economic and social development.
With this objective in mind, the institution aims at assisting African countries – individually and collectively – in their efforts to achieve sustainable economic development and social progress. Combating poverty is at the heart of the continent’s efforts to attain sustainable economic growth. To this end,
the Bank seeks to stimulate and mobilize internal and external resources to promote investments as well as provide its regional member countries with technical and financial assistance.
African Development Bank-Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (AfDB-JADS)
To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must first apply to APU. APU will then select eligible candidates to recommend to the scholarship organization.
WHAT DOES THE SCHOLARSHIP COVER?
- Tuition fee coverage for the duration of the study program (24 months).
- Monthly living stipend for the duration of the study program (24 months).
- Air travel from the home country to the host university at the start of the study program and back home at the end of the scholarship period.
- Health insurance, usually obtained through the university.
- Additional six (6) months for advance preparatory study or internships after graduation.
- For scholars engaged in research, a special grant may be available for research and thesis preparation.
- In special circumstances, computer literacy, preparatory language and other similar courses may be covered under the scholarship.
Note: The scholarship only covers the duration of the graduate program or two years, whichever is less.
The Scholarship does not cover:
- Expenses to bring and/or support scholar’s family members;
- Extra-curricular courses or training;
- Language training not provided by the graduate program; and
- Expenses related to supplementary educational materials, field trips, participation in workshops/seminars; or Educational equipment such as computers.
Note: The JADS program may only supplement, and does not duplicate, any other source of financial support/fellowship you might have. If selected as a finalist or if you are awarded a scholarship, you must inform the JADS Secretariat if you have other sources of financial support. The JADS stipend may be withdrawn completely or partially if during the scholarship period the program has evidence of additional sources of support.
Eligibility Requirements
- 1.Be a national of an AfDB member country
- 2.Be 35 years old or less
- 3.Have a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) in energy, agriculture, health.environmental sustainability, engineering studies or related areas with excellent academic records, relevant professional experience and a history of supporting your country’s development efforts
- 4.Have at least 1 year of paid employment in your home country or in other African countries after receiving your Bachelor’s (or equivalent degree) within the past 3 years
- 5.Not be living or working outside of your home country
- 6.Not already be enrolled in a graduate degree program
- 7.Not be an Executive Director, his/her alternate, and/or staff of all types of appointments of the African Development Bank Group or a close relative of the aforementioned by blood or adoption with the term “close relative” defined as: Mother, Father, Sister, Half-sister, Brother, Half-brother, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, Niece, or Nephew
- 8.Agree to return to your home country to contribute to its economic and social development after completion of studies under the program
Award
- Full tuition
- 140,000 JPY per month for living expenses (amount subject to change)
- Economy class air travel between the home country and APU at the beginning and end of the program
Application and Selection Process
- 1.Request to be considered for this scholarship within the APU Online Application and submit the application by September 16, 2024 (for April 2025 enrollment) or January 10, 2025 (for September 2025 enrollment). No application form or additional documents are required to be considered for this scholarship.
- 2.APU reviews application documents and selects suitable candidates to recommend to the AfDB-JADS.
- 3.Applicants selected to be recommended for this scholarship are notified with their final APU application results.
- 4.The final scholarship award results are decided by AfDB-JADS.
